PRESS RELEASE - FOR

REALTORS® OPPOSE
INDUSTRIALIZATION OF HOOD CANAL
The Kitsap County Association of REALTORS®, the
largest trade
organization in Kitsap county representing over
1,500 real estate
professionals, has formally announced its
opposition to the future
industrialization of Hood Canal.
Association leaders have been actively
monitoring impacts to Hood Canal
for decades and believe new industrial projects
could have adverse
impacts on the canal and to the quality of life
of county residents.
Currently proposed projects affecting Hood Canal
could:
• Introduce invasive plant species into the
Hood Canal ecosystem.
• Increase marine traffic and interfere with
transportation corridors,
including more frequent openings of the Hood
Canal Bridge.
• Increase the potential for vessel-to-bridge
accidents. A shutdown of
the bridge could have a long and devastating
effect on the economy and
homeland security.
• Decrease property values and property
owners' quality of life by
introducing additional noise, pollution, and
the unsightliness of
industrial equipment in a pristine environment.
"The risks of additional industrial development
outweigh the benefits,"
said Thor Holm, President of the Association,
adding, "Our REALTOR®
Quality of Life program commits us to protecting
homeowners' rights and
our unique natural environment."
REALTORS® support efforts to build better
communities through quality
growth, economic vitality, and housing
opportunities that embrace
environmental qualities, while protecting
property owners' ability to
own, use, and sell property.
