Kevin Van De
Wege Opposes Pit to Pier Project
Kevin Van De Wege, who is the Democratic
candidate for State Representative (Position
1) in the 24th Legislative District,
has officially proclaimed his opposition to the
Fred Hill Materials “Pit to Pier” Project on
Hood Canal.
The pit to pier project would vastly increase
strip mining in the Hood Canal watershed, build
a 4-mile long conveyor belt to a 9-story tall,
1100-foot long pier and 900-foot moorage on Hood
Canal, and introduce huge commercial ships and
barges that would transit the Hood Canal Bridge.
In a letter to the Hood Canal Coalition, the
leading opposition organization, Van De Wege
stated, “Thank you for your hard work and
efforts to preserve the pristine environment of
the Hood Canal by opposing the Pit to Pier
Project. There are numerous reasons that this
project is not the answer Jefferson County and
the rest of the Hood Canal Neighborhood need.
The project will strip away precious earth, ruin
waters at the pier, drastically increase
shipping traffic, and make our Hood Canal Bridge
susceptible to damage. I am officially taking a
stand against the Pit to Pier Project.”
The Hood Canal Coalition has over 2200
individual members plus 55 supporting
organizations that include sportsmen, business,
political, community and environmental groups.
John Fabian of the Hood Canal Coalition said “We
are delighted to have the support of Kevin Van
De Wege. His position and endorsement are
important contributions to protecting Hood
Canal, the surrounding environment, and the
bridge. With his help and that of Senator Maria
Cantwell, Congressman Norm Dicks and the
Jamestown and Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribes, the
opposition movement is gaining momentum and
strength.”
