Jefferson: County issues revised
Fred Hill gravel mining report
2004-03-08
by LUKE BOGUES
SHINE -- Jefferson County has released a new
document outlining the environmental impacts of
the 690-acre mineral overlay created for Fred
Hill Materials Inc.'s gravel mining operation in
Shine.
The draft, known as a supplemental environmental
impact statement, hopes to address some
oversights pointed out last year by the Western
Washington Growth Management Hearings Board.
Hood Canal Coalition, a citizens group opposed
to Fred Hill's expansion plans in Shine,
appealed the overlay to the hearings board.
The board ruled Aug. 15 that the county needed
to do more environmental assessment of the
overlay that was adopted by county commissioners
in December 2002.
Copies of the revised environmental impact
statement are available for review or purchase
at the Department of Community Development, 621
Sheridan St., Port Townsend.
The department also has a Web site set up that
outlines Fred Hill's proposals at
www.co.jefferson.wa.us/commdevelopment/FHMhome.htm.
Electronic versions of the environmental review
are available for download.
Public comments on the document must be received
by 4:30 p.m. on April 2.
