Statement by HCC Steering Committee

[Return]

The Hood Canal Coalition is not opposed to gravel mining that satisfies local needs.  We recently elected not to appeal a decision by Jefferson County to issue a permit to Fred Hill Materials for 10 acres of additional mining at the Shine Pit.  The county elected to issue a Determination of Non Significance (DNS) that eliminates any requirement for environmental review.  HCC could have easily challenged the DNS, but declined to do so.  The 10-acre expansion includes more mining on the highly visible eastern face of Shine Pit.  Our concern is not reasonable mining operations.  Our concern is not about the view of the mining operation.  Our concern is about the environmental, recreational, economic and transportation impacts of grossly over-sized mining operations and the ill-conceived pit to pier project.  These things we shall continue to oppose.
