WHO WE ARE
We are a group of concerned citizens who started the process of educating and informing the public of Fred Hill Materials (FHM) “Pit to Pier” project. This effort was started in May 2002.
- To inform the public of the true scope, magnitude, and impacts of this project
- To ensure that the permit and environmental review processes are open and comprehensive
- To keep our elected officials and other policymakers aware of our concerns
- To insist that the ultimate decision regarding this project favors long-term benefits of the public rather than the short term benefits of a few
In 1976 The Shoreline Hearings Board struck down a similar proposal by a gravel mining company to build a conveyor belt and pier at the mouth of the Hamma Hamma River (South Hood Canal). If this proposed “Pit to Pier Project” is approved it will be precedent setting and open the door for additional industrialization of Hood Canal.
Increased traffic congestion, potential for bridge/vessel accidents, adverse economic impacts, and destructive environmental implications are just a few reasons why this project doesn’t make sense to the people in this region. Please join the effort to stop this project. This operation will become a reality if the public doesn’t get involved in the process.
